Should I filter my tap water?

Currently, to prevent blue green algae from reaching the mains water supply, water treatment facilities around Northern Ireland will be having to increase the strength of their treatments to combat the sudden blue-green algae bloom. This will lead to a much higher concentration of chlorine and other chemicals in the tap water that reaches your house. These chemicals will lead to your tap water having an unpleasant taste and smell. Our GW5 and GW1 water filters effectively and efficiently remove these excess chemicals and let you enjoy water as good as bottled water straight from your tap.

There are many other ways in which a water filter can benefit you in your life. Chlorine and other contaminants can vaporise in hot water and be absorbed into your skin leading to dry skin and hair. A water filter for whole house system such as our GW1 water filter will prevent the contaminants from being present and leave your skin and hair much healthier.  A whole house water filter can also reduce your need to buy bottled water from the shop and reduce your overall plastic usage. Do your part in helping the environment by installing a water filter in your home today.

How long do the filters last?

Our top-spec GW5 water filter for whole house will last 2 years between filter replacements. Replacements can be purchased for just £325. That's less than 45p per day for pure, safe drinking water that you can trust even when the mains supply is contaminated. The GW1 lasts even longer as it only filters one tap in your home; Lasting up to 3 years, that brings your costs all the way down to just 23p per day for fresh, filtered water straight from the tap.

What type of filter is used?

Our water filters use a unique 5 stage water filter to ensure maximum efficiency and performance. Our filters consist of 5 stages of activated charcoal which provide optimum performance along with a longevity that is seen nowhere else in the market.

How much do our water filter systems cost?

Our top-of-the-line GW5 water filter for whole house system starts at just £650. This includes an installation by a professional plumber and an on-site survey beforehand to ensure that we can make our whole house water filter work for you. Our simple GW1 under sink water filter unit costs just £260 and is simple enough to install by yourself. We include DIY instructions along with every order for you to get up in running in no time.

    Blue-green algae northern ireland

    What is blue-green algae?

Blue-green algae, also known as Cyanobacteria, are a group of photosynthetic bacteria that inhabit a wide variety of habitats, including freshwater, marine, and terrestrial environments. They are highly resilient, capable of surviving in extremely adverse conditions, and are known for their ability to perform photosynthesis. When these algae bloom in large concentrations, they can produce toxins harmful to humans and animals. This has been apparent with the recent surge of blue green algae in Northern Ireland's Lough Neagh.

What are the health effects of drinking blue-green algae?

The consumption of water contaminated with blue-green algae, especially those in bloom, can lead to a range of health effects in humans. The toxins produced by these algae can cause symptoms ranging from mild discomforts, such as skin irritation, eye irritation, diarrhoea, and vomiting, to severe conditions that affect the liver and nervous system. Liver damage induced by the toxins can lead to longer-term health complications, while neurotoxins may cause tingling, numbness, dizziness, and muscle weakness. In the most severe cases, ingestion of these toxins can be fatal. It is therefore crucial to avoid contact and consumption of water suspected of blue-green algae contamination. Just coming in contact with blue-green algae can also cause issues such as respiratory effects, skin irritation and symptoms similar to hay fever.

What if my dog drinks blue-green algae?

Animals such as dogs are affected even more severely than us humans and can lead to fatal poisoning. If your dog drinks water contaminated with blue-green algae, it may experience symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, or excessive drooling. More severe indications of poisoning may include difficulty breathing, seizures, disorientation, or collapse. Rapid liver failure can occur within a few hours to days following ingestion. If your dog shows any of these symptoms after drinking from an untrustworthy water source, seek immediate veterinary attention. It's crucial to prevent pets from drinking from bodies of water where blue-green algae blooms are present as there is no known antidote for the toxins they produce.

How to remove blue-green algae from drinking water?

To remove blue-green algae from your drinking water you will require a special water filter that uses a different type of filtration. These filters will use nanofiltration, ultrafiltration, or reverse osmosis methods to remove the blue-green algae from your water supply.
